Our 65-hour, state-certified training consists of lectures, activities, and interactive discussions designed to provide volunteer counselor-advocates with the necessary knowledge and skills to respond to hotline calls and in-person accompaniments for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, and child abuse. Training presenters and facilitators include multi-disciplinary professionals, experienced volunteers, survivors, and Peace Over Violence staff.
Normally it would cost about $800 to train one trainee. However, we ask only for a non-refundable $75 processing fee for the training. Please do not allow this expense to deter you from participating in the training. We will ask you to pay this $75 fee when we conduct your volunteer interview. However, if this is a hardship, special arrangements can be made with the Training Coordinator. We are very flexible about this. Our goal is to train the best crisis counselor-advocates in Los Angeles – income level and employment status is not criteria for qualification.
The Crisis Intervention training consists of sessions on Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30pm and Saturdays from 9:00am-5:00pm. A schedule of the training course is enclosed for your review. Attendance is required at all lectures and role play sessions. Please plan ahead, and out of respect for your sister trainees, arrive on time. Role plays will take place during most training sessions. Trainees are required to satisfactorily complete a series of training role plays in order to prepare for Crisis Intervention work.
Trainees will receive a training manual with sections assigned as preparation for the lectures. Trainees are expected to keep up with this reading, as this maximizes the usefulness of lecture sessions. During the second week of training, each trainee will also select one additional text from our suggested reading list. Trainees will be asked to provide a brief presentation about their selected text at the end of training
