Basic Program

4 Hour Self Defense & Safety Class

Our Basic Self Defense classes are presented in 4 hours. Within this class, there are three major components which are taught as a means to empower women to prevent crime and victimization, break the myths surrounding violence against women, and develop simple, easy to use self-defense techniques.

Awareness—The foundation of prevention

Assault prevention must begin with education. In this module participants will learn the latest statistical information and discuss the myths and misconceptions we all grew up with. Participants will learn how to maintain awareness of their daily environment and decrease their potential for being targeted for assault.

Assertiveness—The most effective prevention

Assertiveness is one of the most effective techniques in avoiding assault. An assertive response may prevent as much as 80% of potential attacks. Participants will practice using assertive body language, eye contact and verbal confrontation skills

Physical Techniques—Basic techniques

These techniques will focus on developing some basic skills which would enable the participant to disable an assailant and get away. The key is to make a commitment to participate in your own safety and to do what is necessary to reduce risk and become empowered to act, rather than to be acted upon.

Testimonials

“It took me a long time to sign up for this class, but glad I finally did it. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I think it was the fear that I would not be able to do the physical techniques. I did it and glad I did it. I am thankful for this class, I now know I can do it.”

“This has been an awesome experience. I believe it has changed me to a new “me” I am so glad I listened to my friend when she told me I needed to take this class.”

“Because I will be going to college out of state and move into an unfamiliar area with unfamiliar people, it was important for me to take this class. I knew I needed to take a class to protect myself. I had already looked around at other classes, but this class best fit me. At first I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know what to expect, but when it was all over I felt a sense of relief, security and empowerment. I now feel more empowered and confident about myself. I don’t fear walking through a new campus or a new neighborhood. I now have options, but most of all I have a voice … a LOUD voice that is worth protecting.”
