To date, Latina Services has made significant contributions, both at an individual level and at a policy level. In the early 1990’s, a LACAAW staff member was selected as a delegate to investigate, educate and bring visibility to the rampant perpetration of sex crimes committed against undocumented women and children along the United States/Mexico border. The “Border Violence Delegation” was spearheaded by MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund), and included a variety of other immigrant serving agencies working in Southern California.
The Latina Services staff were instrumental in raising awareness regarding the extent of domestic and sexual violence perpetrated against immigrant and undocumented women and children. These efforts resulted in increased awareness through the Spanish language media, public testimony to the Los Angeles City Council and written publications for the Hasting Women’s Law Journal. Testimonials included information regarding cross-reporting between law enforcement and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), as well as community reluctance to report due to the perception of cross-reporting.
