Self Defense Workshop

Peace Over Violence Women’s Self Defense workshop
  • ages 13-16 from 6-7:30
  • ages 17+ from 7:30-9
  • Our Peace Over Violence Self Defense Workshop is designed to focus on three areas of self-defense for women: Awareness, Assertiveness & Physical Techniques. In this workshop you will learn how to identify the myths and realities of sexual, abuse, maintain an awareness of daily environment, identify target areas and weapons of the body, as well as use simple physical techniques defend from assault.
Your Voice workshop
  • ages 17+ from 6-7:30
  • Ever wish you could find the right words to let others know what you need from them? Wonder if there’s a way to feel more confident setting boundaries with friends, families, colleagues? This workshop will help you tune into yourself and your inner wisdom and find your assertive voice. Come discover how to communicate more effectively about what you need.
When Lines Get Crossed Online workshop
  • ages 13-16 from 7:30-9
  • Everyday teens face online situations that cross the line. A friend posts a secret of yours and now its really public. A friend starts a rumor about another friend. Someone you barely know publishes some pretty harsh words about you or a friend. In this fun and informative workshop, you’ll join with other teens to talk about your online life and ways to deal when friends are not so friendly online.

Beyond Beats & Rhymes

Peace Over Violence and the Flintridge Center present a documentary screening of Beyond Beats and Rhymes + a panel discussion at the Jackie Robinson Center in Pasadena.

Beyond Beats and Rhymes takes an in-depth look at masculinity and manhood in rap and hip-hop, where creative genius collides with misogyny, violence and homophobia, exposing the complex intersections of culture and commerce.

VAWA Policy Training

Policy Training and VAWA Reauthorization Field Hearing

Family Violence Prevention Fund and Rainbow Services will be hosting a policy training for organizations on how to influence policymakers, media and the public to advance the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization, which expires next year.

The law is responsible for over $600 million annually going to nearly 25 different programs to create and support comprehensive, cost-effective responses to prevent and respond to violence against women. The policy training lessons can be applied to local and state-level advocacy efforts.

The second half of the program will be a “listening session” for local providers and advocates to propose changes and provide feedback on VAWA programs directly to federal officials. A policy toolkit will be available and shared with attendees to use with your supporters. We hope that you join us!

  • Assistance available for immigrant survivors of sexual assault;
  • Remedies for immigrant victims of domestic violence;
  • Effective collaborations between advocates and legal services providers;
  • Further reforms needed in future legislation, including:
    • The Violence Against Women Act of 2011
    • Comprehensive Immigration Reform
    • The International Violence Against Women Act

“Behave” – Special Law & Order SVU Screening + Panel Discussion
