In 2005, Peace Over Violence worked side by side with the office of Assembly Member MontaƱez to create a bill that would do the following:
Require schools to establish a policy and protocol for dealing with teen dating violence in middle and high schools
Require the State Department of Education to include teen dating violence education into the current health curriculum
Recommend school counselors are trained on the dynamics of teen dating violence
Encourage schools to work with existing community organizations that are trained in the areas of domestic violence and rape prevention
On February 16, 2005 AB506 (Teen Dating Violence Prevention Bill) was introduced by Assembly Member MontaƱez with Peace Over Violence being the sponsoring agency. Despite the many efforts, AB 506 came across some obstacles in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and unfortunately we were unable to make any changes that would bring it out of the committee. Although there are no mandates in the language, there was indeed a cost pressure that was included in the analysis.
